The candle clock, one of humanity's earliest timekeeping devices, first appeared in historical records around 520 AD. Its invention is chronicled in a Chinese poem by You Jiangu, who described a method of measuring time using candles of uniform weight and thickness, marked in sections to indicate the passage of time.
